Hi Everyone!

Mama and I have been looking on the Internet for the reasons why wildlife is disappearing from the planet.
We found information on a survey that states almost a third of the earth’s species of wildlife have been wiped out since 1970. Human activities such as habitat destruction and pollution have had the greatest effect on the numbers of birds, animals, marine and freshwater creatures.
According to the conservation charity Living Planet Index, the number of land-based species fell by 25 percent, marine species by 28 percent, and freshwater species by 29 percent between 1970 and 2005.They, further, stated that an undertaking by EU (European Union) countries to halt the loss by 2010 will not be met and the situation is likely to get worse as climate change becomes an increasingly important factor. The Index tracks almost 1500 different species of fish, amphibian, reptiles, bird and mammal to obtain a global picture of nature’s general health.

The results of another study issued by a United Nations’ forum stated the loss can be put down to five major factors; habitat loss, exploitation, pollution, the spread of invasive species, and climate change. All of the above factors were in turn attributable to the unsustainable demands mankind has put on the planet in the production and consumption of natural resources for food, drink, energy, and materials.
Tomorrow, Mama and I will try to answer the question: “How is this going to hurt our future and can we correct the situation?”
What do you think?
