Today, Mama and I did more research on the Internet. We looked for conservation activites in the Philippines. We found that there has been, for many years, a very strong movement in the area of conservation. Leading this movement has been a group called the Haribon Foundation.
Established in 1972, the Haribon Foundation is today regarded as a pioneer of the environmental movement and one of the most active environmental organizations in the Philippines. In 1984, it was registered as a science and research foundation conducting floral and faunal studies and is accredited by the Department of Science and Technology. It is also accredited with the DENR and the USAID as a private voluntary organization. Known as Haribon for short, the name refers to the endangered Philippine Eagle and the organization has its roots as a birdwatching society. The name has been retained despite the broadening of the mission, because the critical status of the Philippine Eagle symbolizes the environmental state of the country.
Its programs include science and research, community-based resource management, environmental defense and membership development. Haribon is a member of the World Conservation Union (IUCN) and collaborates with international organizations such as Greenpeace, the Wild Bird Society of Japan, Ocean Voice International, World Wide Fund for Nature and BirdLife International. It maintains a strong network with local environmental groups such as the Green Forum and is a member of the Board of Trustees of the NGOs for Protected Areas (NIPA).
The Haribon Foundation logo’s nine leaves on one tree symbolize the nine ecosystems found in the Philippines: forest, marginal, agricultural, urban, freshwater, mangrove, sea grass, coral and soft bottom. The line “Protecting Nature, Preserving Life” establishes the character of the organization.

Today, we are going to learn about the World Wide Fund for Nature also known as the World Wide Fund.
Mama did research, on the Internet, to find out what the WWF is all about. This what she found.The World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) is an international non-governmental organization for the conservation, research and restoration of the environment, formerly named the World Wildlife Fund, which remains its official name in the United States and Canada. It is the world’s largest independent conservation organization with over 5 million supporters worldwide, working in more than 90 countries, supporting 100 conservation and environmental projects around the world. It is a charity, with approximately 9% of its funding coming from voluntary donations by private individuals and businesses.
The group says its mission is “to halt and reverse the destruction of our environment.” Currently, much of its work focuses on the conservation of three areas that contain most of the world’s biodiversity: forests, freshwater ecosystems, and oceans and coasts. Among other issues, it is also concerned with endangered species, pollution and climate change. The organization runs more than 20 field projects worldwide in any given year.
The organization was formed as a charitable trust on 11 September 1961, in Morges, Switzerland, under the name World Wildlife Fund. It was an initiative of Julian Huxley and Max Nicholson. In its deed of foundation, the organization stated its original mission to be the “conservation of world fauna, flora, forests, landscape, water, soils and other natural resources by the management of land, research and investigation, and publicity, coordination of efforts, cooperation with other interested parties and all other appropriate means.”
In the last few years, the organization set up offices and operations around the world. The initial focus of its activities was the protection of endangered species. As more resources became available, its operations expanded into other areas such as the preservation of biological diversity, sustainable use of natural resources, and the reduction of pollution and wasteful consumption.
In 1986, the organization changed its name to World Wide Fund for Nature, retaining the WWF initials, to better reflect the scope of its activities. However, it continues to operate under the original name in the United States and Canada.
I know that this is difficult to read but my Mama read it to me and explained it. Have your parents read and explain it to you because it is important for all of us to know. Most importantly, we children need to know about this so we can learn to protect our world as we grow up.

I am sorry that I did not post yesterday but I was very busy with Mama preparing for Earth Day. Sunday night, Dada explained to me and my brother and sisters what Earth Day is and how it started.
Dada said in 1963, former United States of America Senator Gaylord Nelson began to worry about our planet. (A senator is a person that the people of the United States have chosen to help make the laws.) Senator Nelson knew that our world was getting dirty and that many of our plants and animals were dying.
He wondered why more people weren’t trying to solve these problems. He talked to other lawmakers and to the President. They decided that the President would go around the country and tell people about these concerns. He did, but still not enough people were working on the problem.
Then, in 1969, Senator Nelson had another idea. He decided to have a special day to teach everyone about the things that needed changing in our environment. He wrote letters to all of the universities and colleges and put a special article in Scholastic Magazine ( a magazine for students) to tell them about the special day he had planned. (Most of the schools got this magazine and he knew that kids would help him.)
On April 22, 1970, the first Earth Day was held. People all over the country made promises to help the environment. Everyone got involved and since then, Earth Day has spread all over the planet. People all over the world know that there are problems we need to work on and this is our special day to look at the planet and see what needs changing. Isn’t it great?
One person had an idea and kept working until everyone began working together to solve it. See what happens when people care about our world?
So today we are all planting flowers and small trees. We are cleaning up the street in front of our house. We are, also, going to start being more careful about wasting water and try not to use so much electricity. We all want to learn how to conserve energy better.
