Flu Season

Hi Everyone!

Picture of DJ not feeling well during his daily postingLast night, I started to feel a little strange. My head started to feel hot and I felt like I wanted to just lay down and sleep. This morning, I woke up and I felt really sick with a sore throat. Mama said that I had a fever. Two of my older sisters woke up with the same thing. Mama didn’t say anything but she had the same symptoms as the rest of us.

Mama made us spend the day resting in our beds and drinking plenty of water and eating soup and rice. Mama gave all of us medicine for our sore throats.

Mama allowed me to make a short posting today. She said that she didn’t want me on the computer or Play Station2 as she want me and my sisters to rest.

I hope that I will feel better tomorrow. Mama told me that the flu is something that needs time to work its way out of our bodies. By resting and drinking plenty of fluids, we will be up and back to normal very soon!

Hi Everyone!

Picture of DJ smiling during his daily postingToday is a special day.

Today is the birthday of my “yaya” (nanny). Rita has been with me since the day I was born. She has been just like an ” Ate” (big sister) who has taken care of me day after day. She has help me learn things like my “ABCs” and counting my numbers. She has help me take my naps in the afternoon and she has taken me for walks outside. When Mama is working, Ate Rita plays games with me and helps me draw pictures.

I must admit that I have had to teach Ate Rita how to play video games but that is because I learned how to do those things from my big brother.

Ate Rita is really a good and kind person and she is very much a member of our family. She can never take the place of Mama but she is really like my oldest sister.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY ATE RITA! I love you.

Hi Everyone!

Picture of DJ smiling during his daily postingToday is National Heroes’ Day (Araw ng mga Bayani) which is a public holiday in the Philippines on the 4th Monday of August each year. The Philippines, on this day, commemorates the “Cry of Pugad Lawin” by Filipino revolutionaries called the Katipunan led by its leader (Supremo) Andres Bonifacio. This was the beginning of the end for the Spanish occupation of the Philippines.

The Philippines, like all countries of the world, has had many heroes in its history. That got me to thinking about the definition of a hero. I ask Mama “what is a hero?” and she said that we will start by looking up the definition of the word. Webster’s Dictionary states: “a man distinguished by exceptional courage and nobility and strength.”

Mama told me that this definition is not quite correct as it doesn’t truly define what a hero is. Mama said upon closer examination, many more different qualities than just the above mentioned become apparent upon reflection.. Courage, honesty, bravery, selflessness, and the will to try are just a few of the overlooked qualities of a hero.

Mama said there is another type of hero that almost no one is aware of. In the poorest areas of the country live people who have little resources or opportunities. All their lives they’ve expected to work hard and expected little or no success in life. Some individuals living in poverty with a strong determination to succeed work hard all of their lives with the single goal of rising up from their surroundings and circumstances to build a better life for themselves and their family; they are heroes. There are over 11 million Filipino Overseas Workers working in countries all around the world. They provide over 20% of the Gross National Income each and every year. They sacrifice there lives to provide much needed income to their families here in the Philippines. We call them our “modern day heroes.”

Mama said that everyone can be a hero each and everyday. She said that when we live our lives with the idea that we are here to help each other in every way possible we are heroes. When we help a older person across the street or give up our seat on a bus for an older person; we are a hero. When we help our friends with their homework when they are sick and can not attend school; we are heroes. I think that you get the idea. Mama said God teaches us that simple acts of kindness makes us better persons and that is really what being a hero is all about…being the best we can.

Hi Everyone!

picture of DJ smiling during his daily postingThis weekend is a three day holiday weekend in the Philippines. The storms are all gone and we are having great weather. What has made it extra special is Mama surprised us all and had two of our cousins here for the whole weekend.

It has been great, so far, as I have my older brother and sisters plus two cousins to play with all day. We have been playing games outside during the day time and playing video games and watching movies (with great big bowls of popcorn) during the evening.

This morning we all attended church services and played the rest of the day. Tomorrow, we will play but my cousins must go home in the late afternoon as they must get ready for school on Tuesday.

What a great weekend! I hope that you all had a safe and wonderful weekend.

Hi Everyone!

picture of DJ smiling during his daily postingLast night was a very stormy night with very heavy rain and wind. It was very hard to sleep. When I woke up this morning, Mama told me that the school had contacted her that there were no classes today. I was happy that my older brother and sisters were able to stay home where they would be safe and dry.

We have been lucky that the electric has stayed on all day. Mama had all of us doing lessons. Mama uses a software program that she brought call Microsoft Student with Encarta Premium. This is a program made especially for children to help with their school work. It reaches out to every grade in school and I am able to participate in many of the lessons.

Later, after everyone took a short nap after lunch, Mama allowed us to play games on the computer. It was great that I had my big brother to play with all afternoon. Sometime even the worst events can bring good times.

Tomorrow is a very special day in Philippine history. I will be doing a special posting on the event. See you tomorrow!
